alien.” They coupled “undesirable” with “alien.” Whenever you use “alien,” you couple “undesirable” with it. That is a phrase that has stuck in American life. The Immigration Service used it regularly. An alien was a thing to get rid of if possible. They were just naturally again' 'em. I've never seen such brutality of attitude. Of course, this was not true of all of them. Some of them were just fine and good to any human being they met, but there was a brutal spirit throughout the service and MacCormack and I resolved that we would turn this into a humane institution where people were treated right, with some common sense used and some of the ordinary social principles of handling human beings applied.
I said, “I think this fellow is just the opposite. I think he loves this old game. I think, what's more, he's known some of these scandals and winked at them, and has not reported them. I think he may even have been in them.”
“No,” he said, “I don't think he's been in them. I'm pretty clear about that. But I agree with you. That's just way I want him.”
