Mary Rumsey's kind intervention, saying, “Oh, come and live with me,” I would have really had a hard time finding the time to locate myself.

I was trying, therefore, all the time to get new people, to make changes in the Department, to get a working staff, to get some concept of how we would operate and what the laws were, to become acquainted with members of Congress.

We were sworn in on the first Sunday we were in Washington. The next Saturday I went back to New York to pick up my things, and so forth. Before I left Washington I got a telephone call from Leo Wolman. He said that he wanted to say something to me, He said he thought I knew that he was my friend and he wanted to tell me something that he thought would be to my advantage. He said, “Sidney Hillman and the rest of the boys are getting very restive. I thought I ought to tell you.”

I said, “What are they restive about?” “Well, they're restive,” he said, “because nothing is being done for labor.” I said, “Why, Mr. Wolman, how long has the new administration been here?” “Well, “He said, “I know there hasn't been time to turn around, but they were so excited about the Democratic victory that they wanted some thing to happen. You know,
