his name on it. She had wrapped it up in a gentleman's large silk handkerchief which had belonged to him. She came bringing me that as a gift. The new Secretary of Labor pleased her for some reason or other. She was getting old and she wanted to give this book to the new Secretary of Labor, so she came bringing it. She was a very sweet little old lady. She was simple and nice and didn't stay long, and I was quite touched.
People like that came to call, however. Mrs. Edward Bellamy came to call. The strangest people came wandering in. I had heard the names of both of those ladies. I didn't know that they still lived, but I knew who their husbands were. I mention them to show how far remote they were from the operations of the government and how little business they had with the government. The string of people who came to call were just like that. They were people who knew your father. They were people who had heard of you, and so on. It was just an unending string of people.
In the meantime I was trying to do something, because the situation in the country was pretty delicate and desperate. It seemed as though something had to be done right away. You had to give a show of action immediately to help the people keep their confidence that the President was going to be a competent leader. The President was very anxious for
