“Yes, we've got field kitchens and chow pans, utensils.”

“Well, you could set up a camp.”

“Why sure, the Army could set up a camp.”

“Well, who will set up the camp? Will the Forest Service do it?”

“Well,” said George Dern, contributing a brilliant idea, “You know, Mr. President, we've got a lot of reserve officers who are really unemployed. I've been having the most pathetic letters from them. They want to get back in the service. They haven't any jobs. They're out of work. They're reserve officers and high-grade men. Some of them have had overseas experience. They've all had military experience. Why don't we call the reserve officers back and put them in charge?”

Harold Ickes then said, “So this will be a military training proposition, will it? This will be forced military training. Take the poor fellows off the streets and put them into the military.”

“Oh, no, “ said the President, “that must never be. That must never be!”

Dern said, “Well, they Army couldn't let its property go out unless some of its own people went to set up a camp.”

I said, “Mr. President, who knows how to set up a camp in the woods? I don't. Perhaps you do. But most
