Woodin rather well from New York. I knew his wife who was down in Washington - a very admirable person. I knew that soon after he came down he had some little illness. I don't know its nature, but it did slow him down. He felt disturbed about himself and she felt disturbed about him. That was in the summer of '33.

He resigned from the Cabinet in January of 1934 and diet that May. They had taken a lovely house in Washington. I think the Indian Embassy has that house now. I think it's off Connecticut Avenue, though I'm not sure. It was a lovely house, suitable for entertainment and obviously taken for that purpose. When he died, he was buried from the Presbyterian Church on Upper Fifth Avenue, I think.

All that I really remember about all this is that Roosevelt wasn't going to go over to the funeral because he was so busy, but I interposed and said, “Oh, you must go. Woodin made a great sacrifice to serve in the Cabinet.” He really hadn't wanted to, but had done it do help out.

I do remember the appointment of Henry Morgenthau on January 1, 1934. Henry Morgenthau was head of the Farm Credit Administration. He had been brought down for that purpose. I remember that I was very much surprised, because I had known Henry Morgenthau a long time and I had not known that he any special training or education
