in that field. I remember asking and being told that that was what he had specialized on - farm economics and farm financing - at Cornell. I knew that he had gone to Cornell. His father had talked with me about his going to Cornell at some length. It was a great disappointment to the old man that Henry should want to go Cornell Agricultural College and be a farmer, but he finally reconciled himself to it. It was the first kind of education that Henry Morgenthau had taken avidly and successfully. He was really interested.
When I inquired as to how come he was to be head of Farm Credit, I was told that he really knew that economics of agriculture, as well as straight agriculture which he had practised on his Hudson Valley farm for a considerable number of years with some success. He bought and owned The American Agriculturalist. It's the old farm paper that's taken all over the East. The eastern farmers have always taken it. He edited that paper and so he had a good deal of contact with farm problems.
Somebody also said to me, “He's going to bring Warren down.” I didn't know who Warren was, but then I was told that he was George Warren who taught farm economics at Cornell. Henry moved into Farm Credit and managed it very well as near as I can make out. At least, his reputation
