I researcher during the Wilson administration that I award people say - and I have no basis for this at all, except hearsay - “How does Baruch come out so well? Well, he has a pipeline right into the President's office. He knows what's going to happen before it happens.” I don't think it was true, but people thought he was an old fox to such an extent that they were willing to say that as an explanation of how it was that he always got richer and richer and they didn't. No matter what the crisis was he always came out all right. They were willing to say anything. They couldn't bring themselves to say that it was sheer ability or genius or intuitive judgments. Intuitive judgments hadn't been heard of in those days. Fraud wasn't popular and they supposed that everybody worked by a system of logic or knowledge. I would be willing to admit that he probably was partly intuitive.
I wouldn't know whether he was ruthless or not, because I never saw him in his Wall Street operations. I just heard that people said he was ruthless. They said he would casually ruin other people. Whether that was true or not, I don't know. As I said at the beginning, he loved to be a benefactor, but when the people receiving the benefaction didn't go along with him, he was through and washed them out. So that I think that a man to whom he had been a benefactor, who was perhaps associated with him in business or in Wall Street
