of that kind of life.

When Smith was Governor, I knew of Bernie Baruch's existence and had met him, but he didn't seem to be a factor up there particularly. Certainly Mrs. Moskowitz had no love for him in the later days, though she may have had at the beginning. I don't remember hearing her speak of Baruch at all in pre-'28 days and I don't remember his being around Albany, but I know that Smith saw him when he came to New York. He was known, seen by people and talked about. What he had to say was always listened to, but I don't remember his putting in very much of an oar about anything. I think his attention was always more on Washington than on New York State.

Henry Morgenthau Jr. didn't like Baruch. That's all I know. He didn't like him at all and was always saying derogatory things about him that were not explicit, but gave the impression that Baruch was no better than he ought to be and that if everybody knew everything there was to know about Baruch, he wouldn't have the reputation he had. He was an old fox, according to Morgenthau, and was always principally taking care of Bernie Baruch. This was the kind of thing I heard from Henry Morgenthau's lips. I was never in a position to ask him, “How come?”
