That was when I first realized that the Baruchs were Jewish. I had never thought of it before. I remember the Governor saying, “They have both had familiarity with the European spa and then all Jewish people always have been intrigued by the water treatment as a cure.” Other people have too, for that matter.

So Baruch was up at Albany frequently on business about Saratoga. I was vaguely interested in it. It was nothing that I was particularly interested in, except that it offered employment for the unemployed. It was a good public works project. It was a picturesque, historical part of New York State. I had taken an aunt to Bad Nauheim once when she had heart trouble. She Jolly well got better. She couldn't walk when she got there and she left walking uphill and going upstairs. It was partly, of course, the rest cure, partly the exercise, partly the waters. I was more or less familiar with the European habit of taking a cure every year. French people that I knew always went to take a cure - Vichy or somewhere for three weeks in August to take the cure. They clean out their livers and their intestines and feel better. They take off weight, and so forth. So I was interested in it.

Thus, Dr. Herman Baruch used to come up and Bernie Baruch came up. I don't remember his talking about anything
