kind of a thing, but before that Leon Henderson had moved out of the Consumers' Committee and over into the general management of the NRA and was working close with Johnson. They got along very well and liked each other.
Henderson was a hard worker and began to make himself very much felt. After Johnson retired Henderson was more and more felt. Around the town and in all kinds of conferences Henderson became a person you couldn't do without. If you wanted to confer on something, Henderson was one of the people that you called in. He was a man of good and honorable intentions. He's a roughneck and a fighter, and he scraps when it's not necessary, but sometimes he has great areas of wisdom. He grew to have the confidence of a great many people. You have no idea how many people he won the confidence of.
I don't think he ever knew the President until after Johnson was out of the NRA, and then I think he went over with Richberg and other people who were trying to run the NRA. The President was impressed by Henderson's sincerity and simplicity of expression. He expressed himself very simply. When the labor people weren't being mad at him, they were very much impressed by him because he spoke in terms that the layman could understand. He didn't go off into these great economic blown-up propositions. He was a man of action, but when he was explaining himself he explained himself in very simple terms and explained his economic views
