“That's different. He's talking to him as an individual. They've know each other before. They belonged to the same church when they were boys, or some such things. I've heard Bill Irwin say that he knew Green personally and that he was a decent fellow,” said Taylor. “We've nothing against Mr. Green. You understand that, Miss Perkins. He's a good man. We've nothing against him personally and nothing against you.”
That was that. They wouldn't do it. Finally they began filing out of the room. I went down and talked to Mr. Green and Irwin. After most of them had gone I said to Green, “That's a pretty kettle of fish, isn't it? You saw what happened.”
He said, “Yes. That's the kind of fellows they are, Miss Perkins. You haven't caught onto them yet. You still think they're all right. You think that they can be brought to do it.”
“Oh,” I said, “Mr. Green, they'll be brought to do it. One way or another they'll be brought to do the right thing. Just wait. Give us two or three years.”
He said, “They don't intend to be decent and they won't be, but don't worry, Miss Perkins. This isn't the first time I've been insulted. William Green's been insulted a great many times in the course of his life as a labor leader
