in the United Mine Workers and then as President of the American Federation of Labor. But this is the funniest time.”
He started to laugh. By this time Irwin had said, “Well, I guess I'd better go to lunch with my boys. Clad to see you, Green,” and off he went.
Green started to laugh. He said, “This was funny. I never expected to see anything like that in my life. When I heard you say to those fellows, ‘You're acting like eleven year old boys who don't know how to behave out in company,' I thought I would burst out laughing.”
I said, “Did Irwin hear that?”
He said, “Certainly Irwin heard it. Irwin and I both heard it and we chuckled to each other. When I heard you say that, I thought that was just what they did act like. I never expected to see that. Look at them. They're the greatest industrialists in the country. They're got the control of a basic industry of this country and they don't know how to behave. Nobody's trying to deal with them in collective bargaining.”
They had really acted like shy boys who didn't have any social poise - literally. Well, that was that.
