I said, “You remember our situation the other day, Mr. Irwin. I appealed to you because you seemed to know how to handle yourself. I thought you'd see that this was a good thing to do. I think it would be an excellent thing for the steel business for the steel companies to make it perfectly clear that they invited the Secretary of Labor to come. That's one up for them. It's a good idea. It makes an excellent impression. It would make an excellent impression if the superintendent of the mill is seen taking me around the mill. I want to be introduced to people and I want his cooperation. I want him to want me to come. I won't be in the way. You know that I understand about the steel industry.”
“Yes, I guess you do.”
“I've been in steel mills before, Mr. Irwin. I know all about how it's made. I won't get in the way of the ladle when they're pouring the hot steel. I know just how they do it.” He had said something about its being very dangerous, so I said, “It won't be dangerous. I'll see to that. I'll look out for myself. I'm an expert on accident prevention in factories and mills. You know that.”
“Well, yes,” but it was all pretty delicate and he said he'd have to think about it. Irwin's a nice fellow. He's all right and he always was.
