I said, “Well, would you like me to call up Mr. Taylor?”

“Yes,” he said, “I'd be glad if you would do it yourself. Of course, I'll have to call him if you don't.”

I said, “Well, that's fine. I'll call Mr. Taylor.”

I think at this time, in thinking this over, that Irwin was Vice President and Taylor President. Later on Taylor became Chairman of the Board. He was the operating Vice President. He knew more about operations than Taylor did. Irwin had worked right up in the steel industry. He knew the steel industry and how to work it, whereas Taylor had originally come in on the financial side.

So I called up Mr. Taylor. I knew him well enough socially to be able to call him up any time. We had pleasant persiflage over the telephone. I made no reference whatever to the embarrassing situation of a few days earlier. Then I told him in as innocent a way as I could that I had just talked to Mr. Irwin about a proposal that I had to make, that Irwin didn't seem to have any objection to it, but that I wanted to take it up with him, Mr. Taylor. So I told him about this idea that I should visit the steel mills and then I should make the statement on the platform instead of Mr. Green.

He said, “I think it's a very wise idea for you to
