post Averell had ever had. He didn't have any high title. He was way down the line somewhere. He was assistant to the executive something or other - that kind of a title.
He went to work and Averell Harriman has a first class organizing mind. He just has got it in him to bring order out of chaos and to set things up so that people understand what they are to do. He was invaluable in those early days - just invaluable!
Robert E. Straus also came down. He really came on a kind of political mission. He didn't stay awfully long, although he worked very hard and was very good. He's of the Macy Strauses. He was quite a young man and had worked in Democratic headquarters during the campaign. He was also very competent in his own way and a good personnel fellow. He knew how to go out and find somebody to do some thing. When Hugh would scream that he had to have somebody to do something, he would turn to Bobby Straus and say, “Kindly get me somebody,” and Bobby Straus would go scour around and find somebody.
Among the problems that existed was to find a secretary for Hugh Johnson. He had to have a secretary. Bobby Straus or some body hired him a secretary. Within three days he had fired this secretary as incompetent, nosey, and everything
