good points. He understood his mother's confusion and her lack of understanding of what her place in life was. She didn't want to be shoved into the corner. He sort of got that. He had a nice young wife and between them they showed her some attention and made her happier. He also started in to help his father. He saw by this time that his father was on one of his drinkings again.
Robbie liked Pat very much. She appreciated him and he appreciated Robbie. Between Robbie and Pat they protected the General very much indeed and I think helped him enormously.
I remember another episode that was funny. Gossip got started about Robbie - dirty gossip. There is one incident that is just one of the extraordinary eccentric things that happen when people think the country is being governed by a great plan. People are frantically tearing their hair and doing queer little personal things.
At any rate, the General had shocked the community by taking Robbie with him wherever he went. He was always flying somewhere. They always had to have an NRA parade, an NRA meeting and lots of publicity when they adopted a local code. So the General had been photographed getting onto his plane. Ed McGrady, his labor adviser, always went along with him and Robbie. So the picture would be taken with Robbie smiling, the General and frequently Ed McGrady
