going off on a plane trip to Dallas, Texas or some such place. Miss Robinson was always dressy, always smiling and always looking possessive. Everybody said, “Who's that woman? Why is she going?” This was being gossiped around Washington all the time.

They were due to have one of these big NRA parades in New York. The mayor and others were going to review it. All the code authorities were going to come with their signals and symbols, indicate what progress they'd made in their compliance with the code, how many industries had adopted a code, and so on. It was a great celebration. All the best people of New York, the leading citizens, along with the mayor, were out on the stand to review it, and so forth and so on.

Somebody in New York - some woman's organization like the League of Women Voters, the National Democratic Woman's Committee, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, or some such organization that was participating in the review - telephoned to the President's office, got McIntyre and said, “Is that Robinson woman coming with Hugh Johnson?”

McIntyre answered, “Well, Miss Robinson is General Johnson's secretary. She often goes with him. She's very useful and he needs a secretary.”
