whole NRA in New York if that woman comes along. Already there's all this gossip. Everybody in New York is up in arms. If she comes here and attempts to take over life, tell people where they get off, is photographed with the General, than no other person of any consequence will turn out for this thing.”

Well, McIntyre went in and told the President this as a joke, and the President said, “Send for Frances Perkins.”

I came bustling over when McIntyre telephoned to say, “The President wants to see you right away - emergency.” I came dashing over.

The President said, “What am I going to do, Frances? They're up in arms in New York. They don't want this Robinson girl. Robbie, you call her, don't you?”

“Yes.”

“They don't want her to go over there with Johnson.”

I said, “Well, she shouldn't go. I've been saying for weeks that she shouldn't go. I've told her that she ought not to go on these expeditions with the General and certainly not be photographed. It was bound to lead to gossip somewhere.”

“Well,” he said, “they've got it now and the gossips are on it. What do you think?”

I said, “I don't think she ought to go. Let her go
