the women members of Congress were there and had all come to see me. They were so sorry I had been delayed. Mary under a subterfuge to get them to come at all had told them that it was on my account she was giving this theatre party and we were going to supper afterwards, and Robbie just happened to be there. But actually she had told Robbie and General Johnson that she was giving this theatre party in honor of Miss Robinson. Robbie was being introduced around and this was Mary's bright idea of the way to prevent a terrific ruction, because the gossip about Robbie had begun to be so great that people were all up in arms about it. This was Mary's way of quieting it, showing that respectable women of good position not only gave parties for Miss Robinson, but went to parties with her.
It had that effect. Mary was very smart about that. She was smart and she was quick, and of course she could count on my cooperation. I've never forgotten how we laughed that night because it was all so proper. Mrs. Edith Nourse Rogers and Mary T. Norton were already speaking to me before Mary could get around from where she was sitting to where I was sitting. Mary was saying, “Play it straight, Frances. Play it straight. I'll tell you all about it later. Take everything.” It was very funny because I really didn't know at all what was up, but I saw that I was the expected guest.
