So she got up to being Number 2 man in the NRA within the first year and a half, which showed she was smart. She's able. Don't for one moment think that she isn't able. That was her beginning and her only beginning. That was where she came from. She didn't have any backing and she didn't have anything really. In the New York office of the NRA for the first time she met a labor leader, or a trade union man. For the first time she met an employer of labor, or a merchant, or anyone from the general business group. She met them for the first time. She met the labor loaders for the first time. They had never mot each other. They never heard of her. There was nothing in her life that would have brought them to her. Her husband, I think, was either a salesman or something in the rug industry.
However, she showed herself plenty smart, plenty acquisitive and able to make an impression on people, remembering them and knowing them. So that was her beginning of an acquaintanceship with political matters. Also she was energetic. She would get favors for people. They would call her up and say they wanted something. She would say, “I'll attend to that right away for you and get you that. Sure you're entitled to that. Sure I'll get you that.” She would get for them whatever it was they wanted.
