this house in Georgetown in the autumn of '33 and this was probably in May of '34 that this party was given. Even though it was a large house the garden wasn't very big. It was an interior court garden. We looked over the whole house and garden. The dining room, living room, library, which opened on the garden, and the garden itself were still not big enough to entertain so many people. So Mary borrowed from Ruth Hanna McCormick her house on the same street. It had a very large garden. Ruth Hanna McCormick's house was a simple looking house from the outside, but it was really three or four houses thrown together, with all their back gardens thrown together, in addition to which it was one of those very long gardens. So there was plenty of room in it.

Mary, who had plenty of money, just gave the order to the caterer and invited everybody to come. The caterer put up shelters enough so that if it should rain there would be a place to take shelter under a tent. But it didn't rain. It was a beautiful night. So we had an evening party with buffet supper. It was a real supper and there was champagne. Mary didn't do anything by halves. If she was going to have a party, she had a party.

Johnson had asked her to do it to bind the NRA people together. He'd begun to feel that there were some people
