Lewis threw his arm around Johnson, and they engaged in singing in close harmony sad old songs. They had a most beautiful time singing songs all the way up to the great edification of everybody who was within earshot. It was an amusing and colorful episode, but was one of the episodes that shows the degree to which Johnson was getting himself jazzed way up.
As a result of all this, he quite early, by the autumn of 1933, began to drink too much. Certainly by late autumn of 1933 many people were aware of it, because he would disappear for a day or two. Here was when Miss Robinson was of invaluable help, because she would not only cover for him and substitute for him, but she would go through the motions of saying that she had consulted him. She said she had seen the General, but in reality she would make the decision. She could always handle him so that he didn't repudiate it later when he came back. It did keep things steady.
Richberg, of course, steadied things. Blacky Smith steadied things. Averell Harriman was down in Washington by this time and although he was in a rather subordinate position he helped to steady things. Nelson Slater was around, as was George Sloan, and there were a number of
