“Does the President know?”

“Well, I don't know.”

“McIntyre, have you told him?”

“Well, I don't know that I have, but he ought to know. He must know.”

“Well, then, he doesn't know. It hasn't been in the newspapers so there's no way he would know unless you've told him or I've told him. He doesn't see anybody else from NRA, does he?”

“Well, no, but I think he must know.”

Whether he did or not, to this day I don't know. I didn't tell the President for a long time, or mention it to the President. The President knew Johnson drank a little too much, but I don't think he knew the lengths to which it went, and the great long periods he was in one of these spells - two weeks sometimes.

He finally did have to know, because Hugh got into a very bad state and we had to get the President to tell him to go away for a week or two. He went to some kind of a cure somewhere where he theoretically was getting a rest.

However, there began to be grumbling. There began to be questions. He began to say contradictory things. He began to agree to a code on a Wednesday night. Then
