designated him as his agent. In those cases, however, he has been drinking a lot and you never knew whether it meant anything when he said, “Richberg is not my friend.” Richberg had been aware for some time that the General was uneasy about him. Partly, of course, it was because Richberg was trying to rescue not the General, but rescue the projects of the NRA. He was trying to get certain things done. And probably he was going around Hugh and behind him to get certain things accomplished.
At any rate, from that time on he conceived a great dislike to both Richberg and me openly. I haven't read his book since it first came out, and I didn't read it carefully then, but I read it enough then to know what one of these young students out at the University of Illinois who had been reading the book pointed out to me. He said, “Johnson makes you out in his book as one of the chief villainesses. You and Richberg are villains.” I remembered then that was the case. Naturally, that being the way he felt about it, I didn't see much of him. He never came around socially again. He was busy cleaning up and getting out.
It was announced publicly and in the press almost immediately that he was resigning. There seemed to be no doubt about that. I don't remember why the period of time before his resignation was continued, or even if it was.
