John Glenn was the head of the Russell Sage Foundation. Mrs. Glenn, before they went to New York, had been the head of the Charity Organization Society of Baltimore. She was Mary Brown Glenn. Her brother, Donaldson, was a very intelligent man. I had great hopes of him, because I assumed that he had a social mind. In fact, I think he did. I think he was somewhat socially minded. I didn't realize until later that he had gotten into General Motors via the tie-up with the Du Pont interests, one of their financial tie-ins.

Anyhow, I got in touch with these men when this thing got hot and said that I thought they ought to come down and talk it over with me. Sloan said to me, “We can't do that. We can't come to Washington. It'll be known that we're there. The men will get hold of it and they'll think we're giving in to the government. We've got to ride this out. We've just got to be firm. If this crazy government we've got here will just send in some troops and put them out of the shops, it'll be all right. The local police aren't powerful enough to do it. If they just put them out of the shops, we can handle it all right. Nobody needs to get hurt. It'll be all right if they just leave the shops. That'we can't tolerate. And we can't operate under those conditions. But once they're out, then we can settle things.”
