I said, “You don't mean you're going to recognize the union?”
Well, no, not settle it like that, but we'll talk things over with some of the men, or with the government. But we're not going to talk to anybody about anything now. We've said so. We won't even look at the situation until they go home. Then we'll see what we'll do next. That's all that's necessary. If they hear we've gone to Washington, it will stir up hopes in their minds.”
“Well,” I said, “you come down and nobody will know you're here. Mr. Sloan. I'll guarantee you that. I'll see that nobody knows about it. Come on Inauguration Day. The newspaper men will have their attention all focused on the White House, on the Capitol, on the parade. hey won't be looking around at what's happening in the Secretary of Labor's office. They won't know you're here. They won't know anything about it. I certainly won't tell. You can rest assured of that.”
So they came. Alfred Sloan, Donaldson Brown, Knudsen, a couple of lawyers, and two or three other people from General Motors came. There were about six or eight people. They came to my office.
