law would hold that they have seized it, because they have not done anything with it. It's still there. It's unharmed and it's there. They haven't seized it. They are staying in it.”
He leaned forward and put his hand behind his ear as though he wasn't hearing me, but I think he wasn't hearing me. He was so mad he couldn't hear. Then he said, “I think this is terrible. I think this is awful, Mr. President. I just don't think this kind of thing ought to happen in this country.” Then he burst out, “These labor men have been too much coddled. They've been too flattered. Too much attention has been paid to them. Hugh Johnson had these same automobile workers right here in the White House a couple of years ago. They were laying down the law as to what they would have. Hugh Johnson encouraged them. The Secretary of Labor here deals with them when they come in. Now she says they're not going to be pushed out of these factories.”
I said, “I didn't say they're not going to be pushed out. If Governor Murphy wants to push them out, he can push them out. It's up to him to do it.”
“Well, why doesn't he do it? Why don't you tell him to do it?”
