going to bring in the coffee, or didn't give it a thought really.

In walked Mr. and Mrs. Myron Taylor. I didn't know they were coming. They had telephoned to Mary that they were in town from New York and could they stop by to say hello. She had invited them to come after dinner, around nine. That was the call she had received at dinner. I hadn't had a chance to see her after dinner for her to tell me, and it wouldn't have been of any importance anyhow. We lived on a very free and easy scale. If anybody wanted to see Mary or myself, they came. That was all right with both of us. I don't suppose any two human beings ever got on better together than we did, because neither one of us had the slightest interest even in dominating the situation. We kept open house a great deal of the time.

Anyhow, the piano was the first thing you came to as you entered the drawing room. The door was on one side of the room up against the wall. The piano was right next to that wall. I was facing the door. So Mr. Taylor saw me and I saw Mr. Taylor. I said, “How do you do, how nice to see you. This is a delightful surprise. Do come in.”
