He said, “We telephoned to Mary.”

I said, “Well, Mary and I haven't had a chance to talk.”

By this time Mary rushed forward and was greeting Mrs. Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was talking to me. My group was close at hand and we involved him at once. I introduced him to the people in the group, including Mr. Green, saying, “Mr. Green, you know Mr. Taylor.”

Taylor looked surprised. “How do you do,” said Mr. Taylor. Taylor knew that he had invited himself and that I hadn't trapped him into any such thing as this. They were introduced all around. Mrs. Taylor went off with Mary to the other end of the drawing room and was being introduced to the others down there. The butler came in with the coffee. We took our coffee. There was a little sofa just on the other side of the piano, with two chairs. Mr. Taylor and Mr. Green went forward. We all sat down. We began to talk about nothing at all. Mr. Taylor said how glad he was to have found us at home, that they just came down that afternoon. Then somebody spoke to me and asked me to show somebody a book that was in the library. So I was called away. I was hostess and circulated around
