his employees to join a union? That was one of the things that could not be done. It would just throw everybody off base and they couldn't do that.
I said that I wasn't even asking that. I was just asking whether or not it was possible to think in terms of proper negotiations, proper meetings, deciding how many people belonged to it and who wanted to be represented.
I was very much pleased with this change of attitude, although I knew that the thing was by no means finished. It hadn't come to a showdown. This was only a preliminary inquiry on my part, but at least I need have no embarrassments about proposing a meeting to them if that seemed necessary at some time, which was a relief.
Taylor at that time talked to me about the General Motors strike, which was on. He was very disturbed about it. Naturally, automobiles are one of the big consumers of rolled steel. If that business is closed down for a long time, it affects all business. He was concerned about that. He was also concerned about it as an employer who was faced with the situation of a union who was in this same CIO group. He wanted to know about the CIO and what kind of people they were.
