1840 I suppose. He had every conceivable kind of them log cabins, a little darky who, when you put a penny in, would dance, or a little white house with a boy coming out and bowing when you put a penny in, or a woman leaning out of the upper window of a house and waving her hand when you put the penny in, and four or five versions of the fire engine, which, when you put the penny in, had wheels that would go round. They were mechanical banks, as well as the more common kind that were made like beehives, and all other shapes.
So, anyway, I spent the morning dickering with him about this formula. Then he said, “Why don't you call up Alfred Sloan and see if he'll agree to it? But don't let Alfred know where you are. If Alfred thought that you were in my office, he wouldn't have anything to do with it.”
I said, “Why, Mr. Chrysler, I thought you and Mr. Sloan were friends!”
“Oh, yes, we're good friends, but I don't let him know what I'm doing and he doesn't let me know what he's doing. That's the way things are. Anyhow, Alfred's that kind of a fellow. He never wants to do anything that anybody else wants him to. If he thinks it's your idea, he'll beat you down on it. I think this would be practical
