“He said, “It doesn't quite seem like the government dreamed that up.”

I said, “That might be it. Suppose you just take it for that anyhow. Let me know what you think about it.”

He said, “I'd like to talk with two or three people about it.”

So he talked with two or three people about it apparently.

At any rate, the press came in that morning. I said I felt greatly encouraged, that I believed that a settlement could be made in the automobile industry and that the strike could be brought to a speedy close. I said I believed that an arrangement could be made. Well, would I tell them what it was? I said, “No, I won't tell you what it is.”

“Have you had any negotiations?”

“No.”

“Then why do you think it will?”

“Just because I think it will. I have a criterion of my own for making these conclusions. I'm just telling you. You can print, if you want, that the Secretary of Labor thinks the situation is better, and that it is not unlikely that a formula can be found which will end the strike and make possible some kind of negotiations,
