to talking with the union, it had already been established, because the local people were already talking with, and were known to be talking with, Lewis and Hillman. But Lewis was mad because Sloan hadn't come to talk with him. The company didn't realize the strength of Lewis's vanity. If I had been helping them on this, I could have avoided all that, because I knew that vanity is one of the prime elements in Lewis's nature, and that you've got to take that into account when you start to deal with him. If you take care of that first, he's very simple to deal with. If he's quite sure that you know that he's important and that you are putting your best foot foremost when you come to talk to him, he's all right. You don't give him any third-rate slops. They could have been spared this. But Lewis saw his chance to humiliate them, as he thought they had humiliated him, and so he said he couldn't order the men out of the plants, as he was not even the head of the union. He said, “I can advise these people, of course, but I can't order them. I can advise them just as perhaps Mr. Sloan is advising you.” The company people were always very anxious to say that Mr. Sloan was not involved in this, just the heads of the plants were. Lewis would say, “Well, really, I don't know what Mr. Sloan wants. He has never spoken to me
