the outward visible signs of leadership that will make men stick with him.” Well, Fitzgerald didn't know much about it and wasn't much interested in that.

I don't recall whether it was during that trip or on a trip to San Francisco later in the year when Bridges came to my hotel to see me. It may have been later on in the week during this same trip. Although I was out there to speak to the AF of L, I did a lot of other things while I was out there. I visited the offices of the Department of Labor, the Employment Service offices, and all that kind of thing. So it may have been the same trip, or it may have been later.

At any rate, he telephoned and said it was very important. I said, “All right, come to the hotel and I'll meet you in the lobby, which I did.” Again, he had nothing particular to say. Again, he looked very queer in the lobby of this sort of flashy hotel. He was so poorly dressed. He looked so sort of humble. He stood in a corner and twisted his cap again.

I say all this because the name of Bridges has since become thought of throughout the United States as the name of a man of considerable power, the name of a very aggressive personality, if not actually subversive. So I cite this to indicate the impression that he made on
