me and on the other people from the Department of Labor who were out there as a very non-aggressive type - intelligent and trustworthy, but not aggressive, and not having any of the natural powers of leadership.

The longshore situation continued and it was a long time getting straightened out. The International Longshoremen's group from Seattle came down. A committee of the men from Seattle, who belonged to a bona fide local union of the International Longshoremen's Union, finally came down to San Francisco, probably sent by Ryan. They proved to be a very good group - intelligent, experienced, having maintained a successful local in Seattle in spite of the fact that the San Francisco local of the International Longshoremen's Union had long since disappeared.

They came down and they began to organize a branch of the International Longshoremen's Union among these longshoremen who were out on strike. They proceeded very rapidly and did very well. I don't remember the detail of it, and of course I wasn't there. Everybody was relieved because the unorganized group was so difficult to deal with. They took Bridges right into camp because he to them seemed like a natural leader. Whateover organization there was that there men had it had begun to include Bridges as one of the leaders. So this International Longshoremen's
