strange territory, didn't know who was who. I don't remember who I would have looked to for advice at this time, but I would have asked somebody. I was out there, I think, to speak to some huge woman's meeting.

Before I had had an opportunity to do anything at all about the invitation or give it a second thought, Governor Olson's secretary called up to say that he understood that Mr. Giannini was going to invite me to luncheon and he wanted to warn me above everything else not to go, not under any circumstances to be seen with that bunch of “highbinders.”

I remember saying, “But they're all Democrats, aren't they?”

“Ah yes, but they're the wrong kind.”

Before very long somebody else called me to warn me against Olsen. Then somebody who was in the extreme radical faction called up to say that she really must see me because she didn't believe that I appreciated the extent to which the true Roosevelt doctrine was being sold down the river by all the Democrats in California, including Governor Olsen who pretended to be such a friend of his. It was all together very rattling.
