This was the time then. P. Giannini of the Bank of America was running strong in California. One of the problems in the Democratic party, and there were many of them, was that there was at least a three way factionalism in which Giannini had a faction of his own. Olsen had another faction. There were probably four factions. There was also a very conservative wing of the Democratic which involved some of the old families, the old landowners. Then there was a very extreme left outfit who called themselves Democrats. I don't remember if this was the time when Upton incleir was running on a program called EPIG - End Poverty in California. It may have been that that was the time. If it wasn't, then ideas of that sort were in full circulation.

The two lawyers, Maurice and his brother, called me up and wanted me to go to aluncheen with Mr. Giannini and with a group of Democrats that they thought would be very interested and very helpful. I said, “Well, I'll have to see how my engagements run.” I was going to give it a second thought, because I knew that I was in
