wouldn't have come down to tell me if an unknown person in the Portland, Oregon area had been accused by somebody of going to a Communist meeting, having been in the action group, having paid his dues to the Communist party, was an alien. That would have been reported to the Commissioner of Immigration and he would have proceeded in the usual way. It wouldn't have been called to the Secretary of Labor's attention. But it was called to the Secretary of Labor's attention, both when the first rumor came in from Bonham and when the transcript of the brief hearing came in from Bonham. That is the only unusual thing about the whole case. Ordinarily it would have been put through the routines. They would have examined Bridges on the supplementary proceedings. He would have brought his witnesses in. The evidence against him would have then been made public. Up to now it was not public. It was taken in the private offices of the Immigration Service in Portland, Oregon.
Then we discussed it. We called in the Solicitor, the Commissioner of Immigration, myself, a couple of the older and more experienced people in the Immigration Service who had been through a lot of these things.
