You'd give an interview to a newspaper reporter, and I did give some, and they would say, “Miss Perkins, stung by the criticism of her action in not deporting Bridges, explained that she didn't believe in deporting people because of her views on political matters.” They would all begin like that, would never tell what I had really said. Then they would review all the Bridges case, all the accusations that had been made against Bridges. They made the matter worse than it had been before. They never would give you the credit of saying that you had a reasonable reason for it, and that you were a lawful, law-abiding person.

Well, all this went on.

Roosevelt never said anything about the Bridges case itself. Whatever Roosevelt knew about the Bridges case he knew before this barrage had begun. This barrage was the result of actions that I did not take promptly and immediately when this report came from Bonham. I don't think it's necessary to go into what he said before this barrage.

While these attacks had been going on for some time, and Dies had said, “She's flirting with impeachment,” and other people had mentioned impeachment, I had asked my
