find out who was supporting him, who was back of him, if there was any organization, or anybody. He had quite a bit of money himself so that he didn't need money to support him. But everything he did sounded as though he must have done it in hope of some kind of perquisite, some kind of forwarding of his personal ambitions. But I don't know and never had any further evidence of it.
A friend of mine lived in the same community in which he lived in Mahwah, New Jersey, and was one of his constituents. She was also a Republican, but not very active in politics. They were very reputable people. Her husband was a vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank. They were in that community very well known people, very solid people. She's a very solid citizen. She got very, very angry at the things that he said about me. She, as his constituent, undertook first to write him a letter. He wrote her an abusive reply. Then she went to call on him in his office in Washington. She got the brush-off and the cold shoulder. It was very interesting because she was a constituent. I said, “You took your life in your hands. He's going to put you down as being somebody just as bad as I am.”
She laughed and said, “Well, I think he has, as a matter of fact. But that's all right. There's no harm
