That was in those days when he was young. So he first changed his name to J. Parnell Thomas. Then he moved up in the world on his job, ceased to have any Irish associations, then he changed his religion and became a Presbyterian, or something or other. Anyhow, he just dropped being a Roman Catholic. He just ceased to be a Roman Catholic and ceased to practice. He went to the Protestant church. He met a lady he later married. He did very well in business. This was not commonly known. Only a few people knew about this. It was not known in the district in which he ran for Congress. There must have been some people who knew it because when I asked Mary Norton, who was a member of Congress then, if she knew anything about this story, she said, “Indeed I do, and I'll get it all for you.” She told it to me, verifying what I had heard previously. She knew when it had happened and with what scorn he was regarded in Irish circles and so forth.
However, it was a surprise to me when he made this resolution. He isn't a very bright man. I thought then, and I still think now, that somebody else must have rigged it up for him. Who I do not know. I never made any investigation. So far as I know nobody else investigated. I now think that if these these things happened today, somebody would call on the FBI to look up J. Parnell Thomas and
