I had decided that Edwin Smith was not trying to do what was right, that whatever his confusions or objectives were he had lost the sense of the proprieties of public office, and had lost recognition of his obligation to the President with regard to policy or anything else. Smith was very impassioned about these things. When I would take up a case or situation with him, he would be very violently disturbed about it, and sort of make speeches to me about it as though I were an audience and not an old acquaintance.

Rumors also kept reaching me that he'd made great friends with Nat Witt and that he was with Witt a great deal, that Witt was at his house all the time, that they were very close on the personal side as well as in the office. Also about this time I learned that Smith and his wife were breaking up their home and family, because Smith had run into somebody who was “more in sympathy with his ideas”, or so I was told - whatever that may mean. Mrs. Smith had apparently been discretion itself and never gossiped, never talked. When she moved out, she just moved out. I never have known just what the situation was.
