Poor Turner Battle was about out of his mind. They obviously didn't wished to be turned over to Miss Abbott. She came in and I said, “Now Miss Abbott knows a great deal about the problems of children and mothers.”

Then they shouted, fairly screamed, “So, you'd try to turn us over to a baby doctor. We don't want a baby doctor. We want to know what you're going to do to get our husbands a job.”

Every now and then I would be called out of the room by a Senator's call, or an important call from some other public official that had to be taken. I would ask Turner to substitute for me. Poor Turner Battle! He was absolutely new to this job. When I came back after leaving the room for the first time, he said to me. “You know, Miss Perkins, I think you should send for the police.”

I said, “Oh no, Turner.”

“Yes, I think you should send for the police. These people are either crazy, or they are violent. I think they will do some harm.”

I said, “Turner, I haven't got time to explain It to you,” because by then they were shouting, “They're discussing things secretly.” I said, “The thing they
