would like above anything else is to have the police come here and rustle them around. There'd be a photographer. You can be sure that he would come with the police. All they want is a demonstration that shows that they are being abused. I beg of you just get all the courage you've got, sit here, listen, be polite, say, ‘Thank you. Thank you, very much. Is there anything else you want to say?’ Ask them to speak. Don't argue with them. Don't answer their questions, except to say, ‘No, I don't want anybody to starve. Yes, we are trying to do something to get jobs for everybody. We have recommended a public works program.’”

Of course, as soon as you said that they would scream again, “When does my husband get a job? Where does he go to get his job on the public works?”

At any rate, they must have gotten to our offices about ten o'clock in the morning. I had to go out several times. By this time my staff would meet me when I went out and there was great discussion as to what we should do. I said, “Now, I'm pretty sure that I know what this outfit is. I think they are some Commie outfit. Probably the Daily Worker is financing this for the publicity value. If we don't do anything except sit here and listen, we don't give them any
