down against Roosevelt for months previous, had been so angry because Roosevelt didn't come out and help him on the General Motors business. He'd been very rambunctious against Roosevelt. So I was very much astonished when I saw him coming out. I didn't know that he was there. I said, “Good evening, Mr. Lewis, I'm glad to see you. It's a surprise to see you here.”

Murray was towering behind him, somewhat taller than he was, with that wry Scotch smile, gave me not a wink, because it wasn't as complete and vulgar as a wink, but sort of a change of expression of the eye, which indicated something. I wasn't quite sure what it was. There was a smile on his face, which indicated, “Oh well, there are lots of mysterious things in life.”

Lewis was as pompous as ever. I said I was glad to see him. I said I understood that the platform sub-committee had been meeting. He said, “Yes. I have been in with them. They invited me to come to consult with them about a few matters.”

I said, “Well, that's very good news. I hope you were able to help them with the understanding of certain labor problems.”

He said, “Yes, I think I've been able to illuminate the situation for them.”
