I said, “Well, are you satisfied with what you think they are planning and thinking?”

He said, “Yes, Madam Secretary, I would say that as of the present I am entirely satisfied with what they are doing. They have treated me very well and I think they understand my point of view.”

He was all unction, smiles. He had been well-treated and he felt that the Democratic Party needed him. That was the impression that had been given to him and he was pleased. That was what was also meant by Phil Murray's slightly lifted eye, that they did very well with John. They got him into a good mood and hoped that perhaps he wouldn't be against them. That was just about it. Somebody had sent for Lewis on the theory that it would placate him to be consulted in advance.

I said, “I hope you're going to stay and will be here through the convention.” The convention didn't open until the next day.

“No, Madam Secretary, I have done my work and I shall leave immediately. I've done all that I need to do.”

At any rate, there was a milling around on the mezzanine before we went into dinner. Then the selected 150 or so went into dinner. It was an exceptionally elaborate dinner. I don't remember what we had now,
