him, I think, in Washington, but I took pains to see that they were introduced to him again there. I said that afternoon, “What we ought to do is to do something for Mrs. Wallace so that she gets more widely known in the convention.” So we hastily arranged a tea for, I think, the second afternoon, to which we invited everybody we could lay our hands on. We had it announced at the breakfast the next day, sending invitations to the rooms, voicing it abroad among everybody. So we had quite a nice tea for her.

All this was done to introduce Ilo to the Democratic ladies and others. It was a great relief to them to see that, first, she was pretty, very well dressed, very agreeable, very graceful and cordial, knew how to behave and so on. She wasn't a small talk conversationalist at a dinner party. She was always very pretty, always beautifully dressed and very agreeable. She wasn't a witty woman and wasn't a small talk conversationalist, but you don't have to be $that when you're being introduced at a tea. By this time she had been in Washington for eight years. It is true that the first year she was in Washington she wasn't as good-looking as she later became. I don't know if I've gone into the part that Mary Rumsey and I played in bringing Ilo up to date.
