Henry Wallace's headquarters were in some awful hotel out of the way. I remember saying, “I must go to Henry Wallace's headquarters. I've called on the other people and I must go to his headquarters.” So I did go over. There were a very different kind of people there. There were a lot of people who were obviously farmers and the farm belt people. I suppose they were Iowa and Kansas people. I didn't know most of them, but they were so enthusiastic about Henry Wallace that they were fairly leaping out of their skins. One or two of them recognized me and buttonholed me to ask if I thought he would be the Vice Presidential candidate. The thing was settling down now so that there was intention to nominate Roosevelt, although there was still opposition. I said, “Yes, I thought he was a good candidate for Vice President, that it was very likely that he would be considered, very likely that he would be nominated, and I was for it, but I didn't have any vote in the convention. It wasn't me, but the delegates who would decide the matter. Then of course they would press me as to, “What does the President think?”

I, of course, said in every case, “I don't know what the President thinks. He hasn't told me.” That was true. I could have speculated as to what he thought,
