“Well,” he said, “I don't know, but don't let her know that I suggested it. You call her up.”

I said, “All right with you if I do?”

He said, “Call her up and ask her. She's pretty good about this kind of thing. You call her. If she says no, tell her to see what I say, talk with me about it, but I don't want you to tell her that you've talked with me.” It was the regular husband-wife complication. “Don't let Eleanor know that I'm putting any pressure on her.”

I said, “I'll call her.”

Then he said, “How's the Vice Presidency going?”

“Well,” I said, “There seems to be no clear pattern evolving yet. Of course, the truth is that everybody would like to know who you want to be for Vice President, But you haven't declared yourself in anyway that we can be sure about. Everything is absolutely open so far as that's concerned. They're lining up in groups.”

He said, “Well, what do you think?”

I said, “There's just no knowing how it's going. There's no clear pattern that I can see. Of course, I don't know the inside workings, but no clear pattern that I see is emerging. I think you'll have to indicate somehow or other who you'll want for Vice President.”
