He said, “What would you think of Wallace, Frances?” asking it just as though I had never mentioned Wallace to him, or he to me, and perhaps he had forgotten it. I wouldn't be at all sure that he hadn't already forgotten it.

I said, “Well, you know, I've thought for sometime that Wallace would be the best possible man if you want him.”

He said, “Well, don't you think Henry Wallace would be pretty good?”

I said, “I do.”

He said, “You know, he's got lots of qualities that would be very good. In the first place, he's an upright, honorable man. We know that. We know also that he's not going to cut under you. He's not going to let you down. He's not going to conspire to get the best of the President. He's a man of a great deal of ability.”

I said, “Yes, I think he is a man of great deal of ability.”

“And, he's learning about politics,” said the President.

“Yes,” I said, “he is, but, of course, the Vice Presidency isn't very political.”

“Well, I think he could be a great help to the President. Don't you?”
